(C) Post delivered reftel demarche and related documentation
to MOFA Southeast Asia Division Principal Deputy Director
Atsushi Kuwabara on October 23. Kuwabara expressed
appreciation for the update on the latest U.S. response to
recent developments in Burma, but had no information on any
possible additional steps that Japan might take. He said
Japan continued to monitor the situation closely, and was
looking forward to the October 25 visit to Tokyo by Special
Envoy Gambari. Japan continues to believe that China should
be doing more, Kuwabara noted, and hoped to hear positive
news from Gambari's recent meetings in China.
