1. (C) Japan plans to offer support to the candidates from
Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Korea for the short list for Colombo
Plan Secretary General, MOFA First Country Assistance
Planning Division officer Michiko Nakano told Embassy
political officer on May 18. Japan is inquiring who, in
addition to the Malaysian candidate, the United States plans
to support. Given the limited time prior to the meeting, we
will respond that Japan's representative on the selection
panel should consult closely with ours at the May 18 meeting
in Colombo.
