(C) Embassy Tokyo Political Section Deputy conveyed reftel
message to MOFA Human Rights Division Principal Deputy
Director Yoriko Suzuki March 16 regarding the situation in
Zimbabwe and urged Japan to instruct its Mission in Geneva to
work with the U.S. Mission to coordinate a strategy to deal
with the situation. Ms. Suzuki, after consulting with her
superiors, responded on March 19 that MOFA had already
instructed its Mission in Geneva to contact the U.S. Mission
to explore options for addressing to the situation in
Zimbabwe through the Human Rights Council. Once her division
had more specific information on the options being
considered, she would consult further with her superiors and
get back to us with a decision.
