DOSMUKHAMEDOV, CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF UZBEKISTAN.
1. (U) Summary: On October 2, the Milliy Tiklanish (National
Rebirth) Party, one of five registered political parties, all
of which support the government, nominated Hurshid Nabievich
Dosmukhamedov to be a candidate for the presidency of
Uzbekistan. Post has obtained biographical information on
Mr. Dosmukhamedov. End Summary.
2. (SBU) Hurshid Nabievich Dosmukhamedov, an ethnic Uzbek,
was born in 1951. He studied at Tashkent State University in
the Department of Uzbek Philology from 1968 to 1973. After
receiving his PhD, he worked at the Publishing House "Fan"
("Science") until 1984, working his way up from Junior Editor
to Chief of Section. Dosmukhamedov then served as a
correspondent for the newspaper "Qishlok Haqigati" ("The
Village Truth") until 1986. From 1986 to 1995 he worked for
the magazine "Yosh Kuch" ("The Young Force") of the Central
Committee of Uzbekistan's Komsomol (Young Communist League),
rising from Editor of Section to Editor-in-Chief.
3. (SBU) Dosmukhamedov then began work at the Office of the
President of Uzbekistan. Between 1995 and 1997, he served
there as Consultant, Leading Consultant, and Senior
Consultant. From 1997 to 2002, he was Editor-in-Chief of the
magazine "Hurriyat" ("The Freedom"). He became co-Chairman
of the Public-Political Fund for Support and Democratization
of Uzbekistan's Mass Media in 1997 and served in that
capacity until 2004. From 2002 to 2005, he worked as
Editor-in-Chief of the magazine "Uzbekiston Matbuoti"
("Uzbekistan Press"). Between 2004 and 2005, he was also
Deputy Chairman of the Creative Association of Uzbekistan's
Journalists, and participated in the Department of State's
International Visitors Program during this timeframe.
Dosmukhamedov has served as the Chairman of the Milliy
Tiklanish ("National Rebirth") Party since 2005. He has also
served as Chairman of the Legislative Chamber's committee on
information technology since January 28, 2005.
