(C) On May 30, we delivered reftel points to Arti Hilpus,
MFA Director for Security Policy and Arms Control, and
Taimar Peterkop, MOD Director for Operations, requesting
that Estonia provide one OMLT (Operational Mentoring and
Liaison Teams)in RC-S (Regional Command-South) and five
trainers for CSTC-A (Combined Security Assistance Command -
Afghanistan). Peterkop and Hilpus reiterated that
Afghanistan is Estonia's top foreign policy priority, but
that resource restraints make it difficult for Estonia to
meet these specific requests at this time. However,
Peterkop said that Estonia might be able to provide one to
two trainers at a later date. While Estonia is unlikely to
increase its contribution to ISAF (International Security
Assistance Force) now, Peterkop said that the MOD is
independently explorings ways to add to its contribution in
the future: (1) a medical team, (2) a logistics team, and
(3) a mortar section. While the MOD cannot provide a
timeline for these increases, Peterkop shared this
information with us to demonstrate that Estonia does not
plan to reduce its contributions to Afghanistan.
