SUBJECT: DOMINICAN FUGITIVE ACEVEDO EXTRADITED TO THE
UNITED STATES
REF: 2005 STATE 130335
1. On December 13, U.S. Marshals returned Dennys Acevedo to
the United States to appear before the Supreme Court of New
York, County of Kings, to face 2 counts of 2nd degree murder,
as detailed in indictment number 1400/2001, filed on March 2,
2001. The facts contained in the indictment indicate that
Acevedo, together with an accomplice, stabbed to death an
individual after he inadvertently bumped into Acevedo's
female companion while dining in a restaurant located in
Brooklyn, NY.
2. The Acevedo case was brought before the Dominican
government on July 21, 2005, by virtue of an Embassy
diplomatic note. Following this request, the Criminal
Chamber of the Dominican Supreme Court issued a provisional
arrest warrant. On September 2, 2007, pursuant to that
warrant, Acevedo was apprehended by officers of the Dominican
Republic's National Directorate for Drug Control's fugitive
apprehension unit.
3. Acevedo challenged his extradition before the Criminal
Chamber of the Dominican Supreme Court, with the final
hearing before that Court occurring on November 7, 2007. The
Court upheld Acevedo's extradition.
4. The return of Acevedo brings to a total of 20 the
Dominican-national fugitives returned through or in lieu of
extradition proceedings during CY-2007 (a total of 4 for
FY-2008).
