SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - ASSISTANCE TO HAITI
1. On March 2, conservative, independent "La Tercera" (circ.
101,000) ran an op-ed by Juan Emilio Cheyre, director of the
Catholic University's International Studies Center, entitled,
"Demanding Results in Haiti." Quote:
2. "The commitments assumed in Haiti need to show results.... We
should take advantage of President Bush's tour to the region and
encourage him to implement indicators to measure the effectiveness
of efforts implemented in Haiti and that of organizations that
received US$640 million, the figure that the U.S. government has
invested in Haiti since 2004. It seems to me that Central and South
Americans...should assume a greater commitment with Haiti. Brazil
should play a crucial role in garnering regional actions to save
Haiti. That is the way to build integration and cooperation."
