SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - DAVOS SUMMIT
1. On July 30, conservative, independent "La Tercera" (circ.
101,000) ran an editorial entitled "Davos and the World Economic
Forum." Quote:
2. "The recent World Economic Forum meeting in Davos is a clear
example that the international community recognizes increasingly
that there is an array of topics that must be dealt with from a
global perspective.... The debate about climate change and the
science involved was a landmark, because never before had global
warming been discussed in a forum at this level.... The weakened
Doha Round got a new push in Davos, because the ministers agreed to
renew the trade talks. This is no minor achievement, since the
reactivation of dialogue depends on substantial concessions from the
countries involved.... Another key topic was the increasing role of
information technology in growth and development.... In sum, the
array of topics that call for a global perspective, such as those
proposed in Davos, seems to be on the rise. For the international
community it is an asset to have a forum such as Davos, which is
less 'tainted' by global political differences to discuss these
topics."
