1.(C) MFA Director of Middle East and Balkans Assistance
Antonello De Riu told Econoff that Italy is planning to
announce a sixty million Euro contribution at the Paris
donors conference to support Palestinian reform and capacity
building (reftel). Italy also will funnel 20 million Euros to
support the Palestinian Authority through Italy's
contributions to international organizations. De Riu added
that the pledge is separate from Italy's 115 million Euro
assistance package for the Palestinian Authority that is
funded, but has not yet been disbursed. While noting that
Minister D'Alema had wanted to attend the conference, De Riu
said Deputy Minister Sentinelli will lead Italy's delegation.
De Riu confirmed that D'Alema was trying to change his
schedule and said he would inform post if there are any
changes.
2. (C) Poloff delivered reftel points to Israel/Palestinian
Affairs desk officer Giorgia De Parolis December 7. De
Parolis said Italy agreed with the U.S. that the success of
the December 17 conference will be critical to the success of
Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations - one of Italy's top
foreign policy priorities.
