SUBJECT: ITALY SUPPORTIVE OF RESOLUTION AGAINST
STATE-SANCTIONED RAPE
REF: SECSTATE 155063
Classified By: A/Pol M/C Jonathan Cohen, for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to MFA Human Rights
Office Director Laura Carpini on November 13. Poloff
requested Italian support in fending off amendments that
would dilute the strength and alter the focus of the
U.S.-sponsored resolution condemning rape as a tool for
political and military objectives. Carpini was receptive to
our points, saying that Italy had co-sponsored the resolution
because it agreed that state-sanctioned rape was a
particularly reprehensible crime. Although she said that it
was difficult to state the Italian position on amendments
without actually seeing the text in question, she said Italy
supported USG efforts to maintain the resolution's current
focus.
