SUBJECT: ITALY WILL CONSIDER UNESCO HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE
RESOLUTION

REF: SECSTATE 99971

Classified By: Political M/C David D. Pearce for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d
).

(C) Poloff discussed the proposed UNESCO Holocaust
Remembrance Resolution with MFA UN Acting Office Director
Leonardo Bencini and UNESCO and Multilateral Cultural
Cooperation Office Director Barbara Bregato on July 20 and
24, respectively. Poloff urged Italy to join the U.S. and
Israel in sponsoring the resolution at the 34th UNESCO
General Conference this fall and provided Bencini and Bregato
with copies of the draft resolution and explanatory notes.
They both said they would explore the possibility of
co-sponsoring the resolution, but could not immediately
confirm Italy's position.
