1. (C) Poloff met July 17, 2007 with MFA Office Director for
Migration and Asylum Marco Matacotta Cordella and urged Italy
to support the candidacy of Ambassador William Lacy Swing for
Director General of the International Organization for
Migration (IOM). Matacotta Cordella said he appreciated the
background on Ambassador Swing and would share his biography
within the MFA.
2. (C) Matacotta Cordella also confirmed that Italy intends
to nominate Luca Riccardi for the IOM DG election next June.
The nomination has not yet formally been made, but he
expected it would occur "very soon." Matacotta Cordella said
that some EU countries were pushing for a single consensus EU
candidate, but that Italy intended to nominate Riccardi
independently, regardless.
