1. (C) PolEconOff delivered reftel points on Burma October 2
to Signe Jansone, the A/S level official that covers Asia at
the MFA. Jansone agreed broadly with the points raised.
Specifically, she stated that the GOL supports stronger
sanctions against the Burmese regime and further efforts to
encourage the release of political prisoners. She added that
the GOL supports urging neighbors in the region, specifically
China, to push for progress in Burma.
2. (C) In terms of the UN, Jansone stated the GOL supports
the work of UN Burma Envoy Gambari. She added that the
Latvian Ambassador to the UN Office in Geneva, Janis Mazeiks,
has requested time to deliver a three minute statement on
Burma at the Human Rights Council.
