(SBU) Pol Chief met December 6 with MFA's new Multilateral
Affairs Director Margaret Rousseau and requested GOTT support
for the four human rights resolutions in ref A. Ms. Rousseau
replied that, while Trinidad and Tobago was a strong
supporter of human rights, its traditional position on
country-specific resolutions was to abstain (ref B). She
also noted that certain issues might be more appropriately
addressed in the Human Rights Council than in the form of
country-specific resolutions before the General Assembly.
Finally, she underscored her view that abstaining was in fact
a principled position reflecting due consideration of the
issues at hand and the process by which they were addressed.
