SUBJECT: CANADIAN PM HARPER TO VISIT HAITI JULY 20
1. (U) Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will arrive in
Port-au-Prince on the morning of July 20 and depart Haiti
later that day. During the visit, Harper plans to meet with
President Rene Preval, attend an award ceremony for Canadian
UN Police, and tour a hospital in Cite Soleil. Harper will
visit Colombia, Chile and Barbados before arriving in Haiti.
2. (U) Canadian Poloff told Poloffs on July 11 that he does
not expect Harper to announce any new deliverables during his
visit to Haiti. He stated that he expected the trip would
have more impact on Canadian public opinion than on bilateral
relations with Haiti. The Haitian press has reported that
Ambassador Claude Boucher (Canada) says Harper's trip will
improve Canadians impressions of Haiti.
