(C) The Embassy delivered reftel demarche January 17 to MFA
Middle East and North Africa Affairs officer Kyrillos
Nikolaou. After studying the points, Nikolaou expressed
general agreement and reaffirmed Cyprus's support for
democratic reforms, promotion of civil society, and
dissemination of unbiased information in Iran. However, he
noted that Cyprus would focus its limited foreign assistance
in areas closer to home, e.g., Lebanon. Nikolaou committed
to contacting the Embassy if he learned of any plans for
Cyprus to contribute, directly or through a local NGO, toward
meeting these goals in Iran.
