Evriviades called DCM on May 4 to inform USG that Cyprus will
oppose Belarus's UNHRC candidacy, confirming the GOC's
"principled position to support candidates based on their
human rights record," according to the spirit of UNGA Res
60/251. Other MFA officials have previously voiced concern
that Belarus might win anyway without Cyprus's support, and
have requested that the USG pass soonest news of a third
candidate from the Eastern Europe Group, hopefully by the May
16 election eve. Evriviades further revealed that Cyprus
will adhere to the EU common position.
