Per reftels, Embassy March 19 delivered points to MFA Near
East/Africa Affairs First Secretary Monica Ioakim. Ioakim
responded March 23 that Cyprus had fully endorsed the
position of the EU Presidency concerning the situation in
Zimbabwe and would endorse the EU Declaration. Moreover,
Ioakim noted that Cyprus was examining the possibility of
issuing a parallel declaration as well; the MFA would reach a
decision the week of March 26. She mentioned that the GOC
recently had met with the UK and other countries to compare
notes and positions, and all were pushing for "a strong
stance" on Zimbabwe. Post will report septel any additional
substantive responses.
