SUBJECT: CYPRUS TO CONSULT EU PARTNERS BEFORE COMMITTING ON
UN BUDGET
REF: SECSTATE 168902
Per reftel, PolOff demarched First Secretary Marios
Kountourides in the Cypriot MFA's Department of Multilateral
Affairs regarding the urgency of reaching a decision in New
York on the 2008-09 UN budget. Kountourides responded that
Cyprus had not yet formulated its official position. In
doing so, he would need to consult with fellow EU
member-state representatives, the Cypriot UN PermRep, and his
colleagues at Cyprus's EU mission in Brussels. While not
stating it, he implied that Cyprus would follow EU consensus
regarding the UN budget. Kountarides understood, however,
that member-states were far from reaching agreement.
