External Affairs (UN Economic and Social Division) R.
Masakui, who said that the Government of India was likely to
be "quite vocal" on the issue of protecting freedom of
expression in regard to the anticipated Organization of the
Islamic Conference defamation resolution, indicating India
would oppose such a resolution if it were tabled. Masakui
was not able to comment specifically on whether India would
offer amendments to moderate the defamation of religion text.
Concerning the issues of a special session and resolution on
Burma, a follow-up resolution for an assessment mission to
Sudan, the preservation of country-specific mandates, and
preventing a permanent agenda item on Israel, Masakui
indicated that he would inform his superiors of USG goals and
that the matter would be brought up at India's UN mission in
New York.
