SUBJECT: SLOVENIA DEMURS ON GUANTANAMO DETAINEES
REF: A. SECSTATE 43391
B. SECSTATE 37005
C. LJUBLJANA 186
Classified By: DCM Maryruth Coleman for Reasons 1.4 (B) and (D)
(C) DCM contacted Ambassador Roman Kirn, Director of the
Division for the Americas at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
on April 10 to urge Slovenia to accept Guantanamo detainees
as requested in Ref A. Kirn said he would convey our request
to the Foreign Minister, but thought it unlikely that the
Government of Slovenia would respond differently than it did
to our earlier request for Slovenia to consider taking
detainees who are ready for resettlement (Ref B). As
reported previously (Ref C),Slovenia is concerned about the
difficulties of successfully integrating such individuals
into this small and ethnically homogenous nation.
