1. (U) According to the Ministry of Health, there have been 2051 new
cases of chikungunya fever since May 14, bringing the total number
of cases in and around Libreville to 7,500. Although 127 of these
cases have required hospitalization, health authorities report no
deaths from the virus.
2. (U) On May 18, the Prime Minister presided over a meeting that
included Libreville and Owendo city governments to discuss
organizing a decontamination operation in Libreville and Owendo.
The effort is centered on the removal of large piles of garbage,
which provide a breeding ground for the suspected vector-the
mosquito.
3. (U) During a May 19 press conference, the surveillance unit for
chikungunya expressed concern regarding the number of unreported
cases of the disease. Officials also reported on their plans for
medicine distribution and insecticide dissemination.
