1. (U) Large parts of the departments of the Beni and Santa
Cruz remain affected by massive floods.
- GOB authorities raised total estimates of affected families
from 71,982 to 73,482, or more than 340,000 persons in eight
out of nine departments. Civil Defense officials added that
the deaths of three children increased to 42 the number of
fatalities.
- Health reports indicate cases of malaria, leshmaniasis,
hanta virus, dengue, respiratory infections, skin diseases,
diarrhea, and conjunctivitis. In the Beni and Santa Cruz,
risks of severe dengue outbreaks remain.
- Minister of Planning Gabriel Loza announced March 1 that
Bolivia may have lost as much as one percent of its GDP to
flood damage. Total damage estimates exceed USD 250 million.
2. (U) Ministry of Finance officials said the GOB would be
able to use up to USD 91.2 million to fund disaster relief
efforts. The USG has provided hygiene kits, tents, and other
assistance totaling an estimated USD 1.5 million, and the UN
reports that other international donors have contributed the
following:
- Italy has supplied approximately USD 2.6 million in food,
seeds, and crop recovery assistance.
- Spain has donated food, medical kits, blankets, mosquito
nets, and other items worth an estimated USD 600,000.
- Germany has provided an estimated USD 350,000 in cash and
in-kind donations of tools, food, and medicine.
- Canada has provided approximately USD 220,000 in food,
seeds, and other materials.
- Japan has supplied tents and other items valued at
approximately USD 100,000.
- The Netherlands has provided technical assistance worth an
estimated USD 50,000.
- Peru has donated hygiene kits, water jugs, tents, blankets,
and other materials.
- Argentina has supplied tents and search and rescue
assistance.
- Cuba has provided medical services in the Beni, Santa Cruz,
and other affected regions.
- Venezuela has provided in-kind donations of food, tents,
and other items.
- The UN Development Program has donated USD 170,000 in
technical assistance and cash.
- The World Food Program has provided food valued at USD
500,000.
- World Vision has provided medical supplies and other
assistance worth an estimated USD 1.8 million.
- Oxfam International has donated approximately USD 100,000
in tents and other materials.
