SUBJECT: TRUCE REACHED ON THE CHACO PROVINCIAL BORDER
DISPUTE
REF: LA PAZ 1118
Following seven hours of negotiations on April 23 (reftel),
representatives of two feuding provinces in Tarija, southern
Bolivia, agreed to stop engaging in strikes, protests, and
violence. They further agreed to respect the pending legal
decision regarding their provincial border dispute, which
resulted in one death and several injuries April 17 and 18.
The parties plan to work together to seek consensus on a
proposed solution that they will suggest to the judge, the
prefect of Potosi, who will determine the boundaries between
the two provinces and the coveted ownership of Margarita
natural gas field.
