1. (S/NF) In advance of the public announcement, Post
notified Malaysian Foreign Ministry officials in the Americas
Division and the Multilateral Political Affairs Division, as
well as the Malaysian Police, of the INSA sanctions against
the two Malaysian firms (Challenger, Target Airfreight).
Post's previous discussions with Malaysian officials on these
cases meant they were well-prepared for the news. They had
no immediate comment on official notification of the
sanctions.
2. (U) Foreign Minister Syed Hamid, responding to questions
by local journalists April 24, reportedly described the
charges against the Malaysian firms as "serious," he said,
"we will check thoroughly the accuracy of the
allegations...." The Foreign Minister added that such
actions by the companies would be inconsistent with
Malaysia's policy against the development of weapons of mass
destruction.
