1. (C) In the course of the July 13 meeting with Deputy
Prime Minister Najib, the Ambassador asked him if Malaysia
planned to send peacekeepers to Darfur. Najib replied that
the Government of Malaysia (GOM) was considering this
seriously, that they had been in touch with the UN, and that
the GOM was awaiting confirmation from New York of UN
interest in Malaysian participation. He added that Malaysia
was also prepared to send additional peacekeepers to Lebanon
if invited to do so.

2. (C) Polchief on July 13 called on the Foreign Ministry's
Under Secretary for Multilateral Political Affairs, Shahrul
Ikram, and Under Secretary for the OIC Ibrahim Abdullah and
urged Malaysia to contribute to the peacekeeping effort in
Darfur. Shahrul, whose office handles UN matters, noted that
Malaysia had attended the UN DPKO's Darfur briefing in New
York for prospective participating countries. The UN,
however, had not yet made a formal request of Malaysia and UN
DPKO was still working out details, including funding.
Shahrul said Malaysia was poised to respond positively,
possibly at the level of one battalion. In a separate
meeting, Ibrahim stated that UN funding for contributing
countries represented one issue that remained to be clarified.
