SUBJECT: KOLKATA EAC-BHUTTO ASSASINATION
1. (SBU) On December 28, the acting Principal Officer convened
an EAC meeting in Kolkata in response to the assassination of
Benazir Bhutto. The SD Team and Local Guard Force have been
reminded to remain vigilant and to report all security anomalies
immediately.
2. (SBU) Post reviewed existing tripwires and assessed the
potential for civil disorder or increased anti US activity with
local government, police and minority group contacts in Bihar,
Assam, Jharkhand and West Bengal. All parties contacted
expressed sympathy for Bhutto's death. None believed that there
would be any local reactionary violence.
3. (SBU) Post's current security posture and warden message are
sufficient at present but Post will continue to monitor possible
security issues and will make changes if necessary.
