REPORTS OF FIGHTING
REF: KINSHASA 1090 AND PREVIOUS
1. (U) According to MONUC, there were no reports of fighting
in North Kivu over the past 24 hours between forces loyal to
dissident General Laurent Nkunda and pro-government troops.
The situation in the province remains tense, and Masisi and
Rutshuru districts remain heavily militarized.
2. (U) As of September 11, three UN agencies and four NGOs
have registered 7100 displaced families. According to the UN
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA),
the total number of displaced families in Mugunga and Bulengo
areas, 15 km west of the provincial capital Goma, could be as
high as 11,000. UNICEF/Soldiarites, WFP/Caritas,
UNHCR/Norwegian Rescue Committee, WHO/International Medical
Corp., Save the Children and World Vision are delivering
relief assistance.
