SUBJECT: NORTH KIVU UPDATE (9/12/07 16:00 GMT): NO REPORTS
OF FIGHTING
REF: KINSHASA 1087 AND PREVIOUS
1. (U) There are no reports of fighting in North Kivu over
the past 24 hours. MONUC and Congolese military (FARDC)
sources told us September 12 there have been no major clashes
between forces loyal to dissident General Laurent Nkunda and
pro-government troops since MONUC peacekeepers intervened to
end hostilities outside Goma September 6. The general
atmosphere throughout the province remains tense as both
sides continue to reinforce their respective positions.
2. (U) MONUC spokesman Michel Bonnardeaux said in his weekly
briefing in Kinshasa September 12 that the UN is worried
about the recent skirmishes between a suspected alliance of
Mayi-Mayi and FDLR fighters and Nkunda loyalists (reftel).
Bonnardeaux called on all armed groups to end all activities
which threaten the current pause in hostilities. He said
these forces have no legitimacy and no right to act on behalf
of the government or the military.
