B. STATE 162558

Classified By: Pol/C Joseph Legend Novak, reasons 1.4 (b-d).

1. (C) Pol/C reviewed Ref B points with the Indonesian
Department of Foreign Affairs' Office of International
Security Affairs and also with the North America Office.
Mission also provided the points to Albert Matondang, a
Deputy for international issues in the Coordinating Ministry
for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.

2. (C) Per reftel, Pol/C reviewed key assessments of the
U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iran's nuclear
program. Pol/C noted the new information and the conclusion
that Iran had a nuclear weapons program which it halted in
2003 as a result of international scrutiny and pressure.
That program could still be restarted and the U.S. assessed
that Iran was keeping open the option of developing nuclear
weapons. As the Secretary had made clear, if Iran would meet
its UNSC obligations, the U.S. would be willing to enter into
negotiations under the P5 1 offer, which included the
prospect for direct U.S.-Iran talks. Pol/C underlined the
need for Indonesia to press Iran to make the right decisions
and to verifiably meet its UNSC obligations.

3. (U) Department of Foreign Affairs and Coordinating
Ministry contacts said they appreciated the U.S. information.
They added that they needed to review it further and consult
inter-agency before commenting.
