COMMEMORATION

Country Team members discussed the possibility of hosting a
Great White Fleet commemoration event and agreed that no
adverse local reaction is expected. However, as Guatemala
was not a destination of the original fleet, local
knowledge/understanding of the historic event is extremely
limited. In light of the large number of normally scheduled
port visits Embassy supports the concept of utilizing a
pre-scheduled Frigate visit to Puerto Quetzal to commemorate
the Great White Fleet anniversary. Post envisions a possibleQ
event in the April/May 2008 time frame, to include a
shipboard reception, if funding can be provided by NAVSOUTH.
