SUBJECT: Commercial Land Lines to Guyana Out of Service

Ref) Georgetown 444 (NOTAL)

Reftel describes a breach of the only fiber optic data cable that
services Guyana. As a result it can be difficult to connect
international telephone calls to Guyana. The local telephone
company estimates that it may take as much as three weeks to repair.
Post's internal communication, including IVG lines, remains stable
on the DTSPO infrastructure. The following IVG lines are staffed
frequently after-hours and would be able to pass an urgent message:
IPC help line: 747-4881
DCM Office: 747-4204
RSO Office: 747-4245

The following satellite telephones will be turned on and taken
home after hours:
Embassy Duty Officer: 8816-314-5899
Embassy Communications Duty Officer: 8816-314-58998
