1. (SBU) On August 29, Econoff met with Chief of the Air
Transportation Division at the Guinean Ministry of Transportation,
Sekou Oumar Thiam. M. Thaim confided that the Government has
identified a site for a new international airport in Guinea. The
location is south of Conakry, near Forecariah, on the road to Sierra
Leone. He said that due to lack of available funds, and other
competing government priorities, the project does not have a start
date. However, he expressed hope that the new consensus government
would soon recognize the value of a new airport for the promotion of
tourism and trade and get the project started.
