1. (SBU) Global Alumina privately confirmed that the company
has approved the proposed $7 billion mining investment
project in Sangaredi (reftel). Haskell Sears Ward,
U.S.-based Senior Vice President in charge of government
relations, told poloff in a brief meeting on September 28
that that the project has moved past the feasibility study
stage. He added that the company has already invested seven
years and over $200 million into the project. &That
corridor, located between Kamsar and Sangaredi, is going to
be the economic engine driving not only Guinea, but all of
West Africa,8 he commented.
2. (U) Post will continue to monitor and provide updates on
the extractive industries in Guinea.
