SUBJECT: UNCONFIRMED REPORT OF DEATH OF GENERAL KERFALLA CAMARA
(SBU) According to embassy contacts, General Kerfalla Camara, former
military chief of staff, died late on September 9 in Paris. This
information has not been confirmed by the Government of Guinea
(GoG),but sources indicate that the GoG will likely make an
official announcement later in the day September 10. General Camara
was dismissed from duty in May 2007 after military service members
mutinied over perceived injustices. Contacts report that the
General's body will be flown back to Guinea September 12 and
internment is expected to immediately follow, in accordance with
Islamic custom. Embassy anticipates public reaction to be minimal,
if any.
