Classified By: DCM Gary Larson. Reasons: 1.4 (b) and (d).
1. (C) Per reftel the Government of Hungary (GOH) is
currently contributing maximum resources to ongoing missions
in Iraq and Afghanistan. On 25 April, Minister of Defense
Szekeres reaffirmed GOH contributions to NTM-I in high-level
Pentagon meetings with SECDEF, CJCS and at State with D,
noting that Hungary "will renew its commitment" to Iraq by
sending fresh troops in 2007.
2. (C) MOD Szekeres also announced in WashDC meetings, that
Hungary will deploy a special forces team to southern
Afghanistan (RC-South) next year, in addition to maintaining
or expanding its PRT civil reconstruction mission in Baghlan.
3. (SBU) We feel that Hungary, via NATO commitments and
direct assistance programs, is currently contributing its
full potential to ongoing missions. Any further request of
the GOH at this time would be counter productive to our
bi-lateral relationship.
