1. (c) Acting Econcouns delivered U.S. views outlined in
para 4, Ref A concerning the Iran-related export request
to Karolien Maertens, Export Control Attache to the
Ministry of the Brussels Region. Maertens appreciated
receiving U.S. thinking on the specific export application
(Ref B). She added that she recommends denying the
application and finds U.S. arguments presented to be very
helpful in reviewing the case. Maertens will forward her
recommendation to the Minister for the Brussels Region, who
will make the final decision. She expects the Minister to
accept her recommendation. Maertens added that she looks
forward to continued cooperation and consultation with U.S.
officials on export control issues.
2. (C) Pol/MilOff delivered Ref A views on July 31 to Rudi
Brieven,
Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs UNSC Cell
(Belgium chairs
The UNSC Iran sanctions committee.) Brievens said his office
had already advised the Brussels Region Export Control Agency
to
deny the export request. He shrugged off any legal challenge
that the company in question (NFI) might raise through its
reported attorney hired to deal with this issue.
