1. (C) DCM delivered reftel demarche to MFA Political
Director Miroslav Lajcak who agreed that an already bad
situation in Zimbabwe is deteriorating. Poloff delivered
reftel demarche to the Slovak MFA Human Rights Department.
Martina Hrvolova, the desk officer who covers both the UN
Human Rights Council and African issues for the section,
indicated that though Slovakia shares U.S. concerns about
Zimbabwe, it is unlikely to speak out about Zimbabwe in the
immediate timeframe. Slovakia does not have an embassy in
Zimbabwe nor does it provide aid to Zimbabwe. Hrvolova said
that Slovakia will consider raising Zimbabwe in the next
session of the UN HRC (in June) but in the current session
will continue to focus on non-country specific issues, such
as universal peer review.
