(C) The Ambassador delivered reftel A demarche to Acting
Foreign Minister Tareq Mitri on October 1, 2007. This was a
follow-up to the demarche delivered by Poloff on September 6,
2007 (reftel B). Mitri did not think there would be a
problem supporting the re-election candidacy for Ms. Felice
Gaer to the seat on the United Nations Committee Against
Torture, and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment of
Punishment, which is scheduled to take place in Geneva on
October 8, 2007. Mitri also noted the U.S. and Lebanese
diplomatic missions had discussed the issue in either New
York or Geneva.
