1. (C) Poloff conveyed reftel points October 16 to United
Nations Affairs Division Deputy Director Yao Shaojun. Yao
said China supports UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari's
returning quickly to Burma, but "respects the judgment" of
the UN Secretary-General and Special Envoy Gambari with
regard to the exact timing. Yao stated that Gambari seeks
broad international support before returning to Burma, and
these visits in the region will assist his "good offices."
Deputy Director Yao said Gambari will visit China in the
October 23-25 timeframe, but he did not have an exact date.
