1. (C) Ambassador made reftel demarche January 23 to Foreign
Affairs Permanent Secretary William Joof (Deputy Formin
equivalent),registering our concern over the negative
repercussions of a decision to give Sudanese President Bashir
the AU Chairmanship at the upcoming AU summit.
2. (C) Joof followed our presentation closely and undertook
to share it with President Jammeh, confirming that the latter
would attend the summit. Joof said he would advise us as
soon as the GOTG had decided whom to support for the AU
chairmanship, while reiterating, "I received your message"
about the drawbacks of a Sudanese chairmanship.
