REF: A) STATE 49938 B) QUINVILLE-MUBANGU E-MAILS
Classified By: AMBASSADOR CHARLES RIES. REASON:1.4 (B) AND (D).
1. (C) In an April 17 meeting, Ambassador met with MFA
Secretary General Rocanas to provide reftel answers to GOG
SIPDIS
questions regarding resettlement of Guantanamo detainees.
Ambassador clarified the two categories of detainees, and
told Rocanas that we would provide additional personal data
records on detainees to the GOG shortly. Rocanas had few
immediate questions, indicating he would discuss the
information provided with Foreign Minister Bakoyiannis.
Bakoyiannis would then need to consult with Minister of
Public Order Polydoras and the PM before a decision could be
made. Ambassador pointed out that the U.S. would be willing
to bring a Department expert to Athens for consultations, if
that would prove helpful to GOG decision-making. Rocanas
also planned to review that option with the FM.
2. (C) COMMENT: Ref B e-mails clarify partial data
received on detainees, and request confirmation of their
categories. Once that is received, Embassy will provide
existing personal data records to the GOG for its internal
deliberation. At this point, it is unclear whether the GOG
would be ready to discuss with a Department expert as early
as next week.
