SUBJECT: MADAGASCAR OFFERS PEACEKEEPING TROOPS TO SOMALIA

1. (SBU) The Government of Madagascar (GOM) is prepared to
pledge up to 800 troops for African Union Peace Keeping
Operations (PKO) in Somalia. Major General Claude, head of
the Gendarme, informed DATT that he has 100 troops ready for
immediate deployment.
2. (SBU) General Mampianina, head of the Army, says he has
600 to 700 troups in training for PKO. The General feels
these troops will need another nine to twelve months of
training before they are prepared for international duties.
