1. (C) Elaborating on the GOJ's response (ref a) to ref B
demarche, Bassem Awadallah, the director of the King's
office, told Ambassador February 14 that the King made it
"quite clear" to visiting Russian President Putin that Iran
was a threat to the region and not to be trusted. Putin
reportedly agreed that Iran's ambitions were very
threatening, and that Tehran was intent on a nuclear weapons
program. "They should know we are serious," Putin told the
King. However, Putin did not respond to Jordanian points on
implementing UNSCR 1737, investment in Iran's energy sector
or Syrian machinations in Lebanon. According to Awadallah,
Saudi Arabia's Prince Bandar recently related that FM Lavrov
told him that if Putin had to choose between Tehran and
Washington, he'd choose Washington.
2. (U) Septel reports on other aspects of Putin's visit to
Jordan.
