SUBJECT: UAE RESPONSE TO HIGH-LEVEL DEMARCHE ON UNGA RAPE
RESOLUTION
REF: A. SECSTATE 149658
B. ABU DHABI 1749
(SBU) Econchief discussed the UNGA rape resolution again with
MFA International Affairs Director Yacoub Al-Hosani on
October 28. Econchief stressed the importance of the
initiative and the flexibility our negotiators had shown,
including by changing the title of the resolution to condemn
rape by all actors. Econchief also asked the UAEG to
co-sponsor the resolution. Al-Hosani said that he had sent
the original resolution to the UAE's UN Mission in New York
to seek the mission's views. Speaking personally, he thought
there would be no problem with the UAE supporting the
resolution at the UNGA. He did not, however, commit to
co-sponsorship.
