1. (C) Charge urged a supportive UAE public statement on the
Iraqi Leaders Agreement with MFA Acting U/S Tariq Al Haidan
on August 28, 29 and again on August 30. Al Haidan initially
offered his frank opinion that it would be difficult ("Do we
always have to make public statements?"),but after Charge
pressed the issue said that he would pass the request to
Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed (AbZ),currently
on holiday in Europe. To date at least, WAM (UAE Official
News Agency) has carried no statement from the UAE Nor
reported any statements from other Arab leaders.
2. (C) Post has a call into AbZ's traveling party and will
continue to encourage a UAE statement.
