SUBJECT: LEBANON: POLAND OPTIMISTIC ABOUT UNIFIL-PLUS
REF: SECSTATE 130906
Classified By: CDA Kenneth Hillas for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) Henryk Szlajfer, Director for Americas Department at
Polish MFA, told CDA that the new "UNIFIL-PLUS" approach to
peacekeeping in Lebanon after a cessation of hostilities
provides a new and more positive context for Polish
decision-makers, increasing the likelihood of Polish
participation at equal to or higher than the current UNIFIL
deployment levels. Poland is considering "re-hatting" and or
augmenting the 214 Polish UNIFIL troops already present in
Lebanon to support a robust international stabilization force
that will follow UNIFIL, and is keenly interested in what
kind of mandate and rules of engagement it will have.
