1. (SBU) EconPolOff and Cameron Archer, First Secretary of
the Australian Embassy, delivered reftel demarche on October
16 to Georg Heindl, Deputy Director in the MFA,s Human
Rights Department.
2. (SBU) While Heindl said he understood the U.S. position
on the draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
(DRIP),he disputed many of the concerns raised in the
non-papers. Heindl stated that Austria shared the position
of the other EU member states in supporting the DRIP. He
acknowledged that the DRIP does not enjoy consensus, but he
opined that it offered the best compromise on this important
issue.
3. (SBU) Heindl promised to forward non-papers and
Tripartite concerns to the appropriate MFA offices.
