2. (U) Excellency, The joint United Nations website on
gender equality, WomenWatch (http://www.un.org/womenwatch) is
a project of the Inter-agency Network on Women and Gender
Equality. It provides a gateway to all the websites of the
United Nations on the promotion of gender quality and
empowerment of women. The Division for the Advancement of
Women is the Manager of WomenWatch on behalf of the
Inter-agency Network.
In 2005 WomenWatch received almost 1.5 million visits, 5
million page views and 16 million hits, which makes it one of
the most frequently visited websites of the United Nations.
The high levels of utilization from both within and outside
the United Nations illustrate the interest in gender equality
and empowerment of women as an important development goal
reflected in the outcomes of the United Nations conferences
and summits of the 1990s, the Millennium Summit in 2000 and
the 2005 World Summit.
I would like to draw your attention to the funding
requirements of the website to secure adequate staffing and
integrate technical improvements and multilingual features.
Please see the attached proposal describing the main features
of WomenWatch, its contributions and future plans and budget.
I would like to convey sincere appreciation for the support
that your Government has provided for the work of the United
Nations on gender equality and empowerment of women in the
past. I express the hope that it will be possible for your
Government to provide support for this very important
inter-agency initiative.
Financial contributions may be deposited into the following
account:
Recipient: UN General Trust Fund Account
Bank JP Morgan Chase
International Agencies Banking
1166 Avenue of the Americas, 17th Floor

Swift Code: CHASUS33

consideration,
Carolyn Hannan
Director
