SUBJECT: UN BUDGET: APPROVAL OF ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATION
FOR SPECIAL POLITICAL MISSIONS

REF: USUN NEW YORK 12958

1. Having considered the reports of the Secretary-General on
the estimates in respect of Special Political Missions (SPMs)
authorized by the General Assembly and/or the Security
Council, as well as the related reports of the Advisory
Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ),
on June 29, 2006, the 5th Committee approved additional 2006
appropriations needed for SPMs in Afghanistan, Lebanon and
Timor-Leste.

2. The budget for three SPMs were approved as follows: for
the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA),
$54,744,100 for the period from April 1 - December 31, 2006;
for the United Nations International Independent
Investigation Commission (UNIIIC), $17,020,000 for the period
from June 16 - December 31, 2006; for the United Nations
Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL), $5,253,500 for the period
from June 21 - August 31,2006.

3. A charge of $51,908,500 was approved, corresponding to
the unassigned balance against the provision for special
political missions, of the proposed program budget for
2006-2007. Therefore, the additional appropriations for
these missions exceeded the allocation of $355,949,300 for
SPMs by $19,065,700. The assessment for these funds will be
issued on January 1, 2007.
